Description:Zip Zap was born 30 years ago from a simple dream, a trapeze bar in a tree, a costume box and a rusty car. Established by South African born Brent van Rensburg and his French wife, Laurence Estève, their dream was to use the circus as a tool to bridge socio-economic gaps and to inspire and empower young people to build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela. Based in Cape Town – Zip Zap Circus seeks to appoint a HEAD OF SOCIAL CIRCUS The Social Circus unit has two distinct legs, one containing the various programmes that need to be managed from a social development perspective; and the other where circus skills are taught along with all its creative and physical components. The individual who heads Zip Zap Social Circus department must ideally have a background in circus, with a special interest and qualification in teaching/pedagogy and social development. In the organizational structure, a functional position, Pedagogy has been created where expertise can be sourced, as required to provide specialized and/or ad-hoc input. This approach can be followed with any specialist that is required in the department. The Head of Social Circus will be responsible for the following duties (among others): • Member of the Zip Zap Executive Committee (EXCO). • Provide strategic leadership, management, and administration of Zip Zap’s Social Circus arm. • Define, communicate, and drive the strategic plan for Social Circus in accordance with the organization strategic objectives and within the approved budget. • Develop, implement, and manage strategic initiatives and related activities to reach the agreed strategic plan • When requested liaise with funders to explain programmes, lead visits, and promote Zip Zap. • Engage with and nurture existing and potential partners • Manage and coordinate all relevant roles and activities within Social Circus. • Manage, develop, and monitor performance of relevant functions/roles within Social Circus. • Prepare and manage departmental budget. • Attend all Exco, Operations and Departmental meetings, and all ad hoc meetings as required. The Head of Social Circus must meet the following criteria: • Proven leadership and management skills . • Strong relationship management skills. • Excellent communication skills. • Strong administrative skills. • Attention to detail • Capacity, imagination and drive to grow and improve Zip Zap Social Circus department • Creative, dynamic, motivated, and passionate believing in Zip Zap vision and mission. • Good working knowledge of social circus and Zip Zap programmes. • Qualifications in teaching and pedagogy preferable – Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be considered. • Interest and background in arts for social change. • A special interest in youth- and social development is required. • Must pass a background check which will include obtaining a police clearance certificate and a child protection clearance.
