Position description
The Department of Contemporary Dance is seeking a unique combination of practicing artist, scholar and pedagogue to teach undergraduate students. With an MFA in Transdisciplinary Performance Practices currently in development, the successful candidate will be expected to assist in finalizing and implementing the new MFA, and eventually to teach graduate students. We are particularly interested in applicants with strong teaching qualifications and experience in all of the following areas: choreographic creation, creative process and movement pedagogies for contemporary dance. Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate expertise in two or more of the following areas of our core curriculum: creative and technical aspects of production for dance, dance history, practical anatomy for dance, and / or fundamental music training for dance.
Due to the nature of the program, the successful candidate will be expected to work flexible hours during production periods as well as develop and maintain productive research / creation profiles leading to external funding and / or collaboration in the professional milieu. Other responsibilities include active participation in service activities at the departmental, Faculty and university levels.
Qualifications and assets
Applicants should possess a completed Master's or PhD in dance or a related discipline, or in the case of senior artists, a significant body of professional work, particularly related to choreography and the creative process; demonstrated excellence in scholarship; substantial administrative experience (preferably within a university context); and a minimum of 3 years of university teaching experience or equivalent at pre-professional and professional levels in dance. Involvement in practices relevant to dance in Canada and internationally is considered a distinct asset.

The ideal candidate will also have excellent listening, communication and networking skills and be able to work effectively with others to build a clear sense of direction.
Since the Department is regarded as a key partner in the ecology and evolution of dance in Montreal, knowledge of the city's unique position as a francophone metropolis with a well-developed and diversified dance community is considered an asset. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French is a considerable strength.

Information about the Department The Department of Contemporary Dance is one of the only university dance departments in North America offering a comprehensive approach to choreographic creation, performance and technical training within a vibrant, interdisciplinary Faculty of Fine Arts. With three full-time faculty and over a dozen part-time instructors, the department admits approximately 30 Dance Majors on a yearly basis.
Over the last four decades, the department's mission has been to develop each student's creative and technical potential in a challenging and dynamic environment that promotes artistic autonomy, initiative, exchange and diversity of expression. The program provides an in-depth and global experience to choreography and the creative process. Integrated theory courses in dance histories and in critical and embodied practices foster a diversity of perspectives to contextualize each student's research creation. Students further hone their skills and practical experience through courses in music, aspects of production and practical anatomy. As part of their BFA degree, students have access to a wide selection of fine arts and general arts and science electives.
Our talented cohorts stage their own choreographies and have many opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, as well as perform in new works created by their peers. In order to fully support the student's artistic autonomy, our professors do not choreograph for, nor stage their works with students. The department, through its activities and alumni, is an active participant in the advancement and renewal of dance in Montreal, a major cultural capital known for its innovation and openness.
