The Technical Director (TD) is a senior member of the Production Department, reporting to the Director of Production. This role supports directors+rsquo; and designers' visions within the allotted time, budget, and scope, while managing the technical staff and maintaining high values of artistic excellence; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and fiscal responsibility. The Technical Director requires expertise across all technical theater disciplines, along with proven experience working with and leading theatrical unions.
A successful candidate will first and foremost be a good manager and a good leader. They will be able to identify problems early, anticipate and communicate potential challenges to key stakeholders, and seamlessly connect artistic vision with technical reality, designers with craftspeople, budgets with ambitions. This position is expected to lead through expertise while uplifting and empowering their team and making key decisions to keep the process moving. This role requires at least four years of professional experience, proven leadership with IATSE crews, deep knowledge of stage technologies, and fluency in union agreements (IATSE, AEA, USA, SDC, AFM, LORT). Candidates should demonstrate strong project management, budgeting, collaboration, and communication skills across diverse teams. Must be able to work at heights, lift up to 30 lbs, use power tools and small components, and navigate varied lighting and sound. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and administrative software is required, along with a strong commitment to equity and inclusion.
