Technical Director
The Groundlings Theatre & School
Los Angeles, CA

The Groundlings Theatre & School, a leading non-profit improv theatre in Los Angeles, seeks an experienced, proactive Technical Director to join our organization. The Technical Director (TD) will bring technical production expertise and strong organizational skills to the day-to-day operations and management of our venues. The TD reports directly to the Managing Director and supervises the tech and music staff.

Responsibilities include:
Hiring, training, developing, and scheduling technicians and musicians.

Maintaining and servicing sound and lighting units, boards, instruments, microphones, speakers, amplifiers, EQs, and other equipment, in conjunction with the sound, lighting, and crew staff.

Designing, coordinating, and executing any new construction, set pieces, props, or changes within our school, performance, and staff spaces.

Supervising and coordinating regular maintenance work (e.g., carpet cleaning, plumbing, pest control, HVAC) and executing special projects.

Overseeing the technical development of productions, ensuring prompt and effective communication between directors, cast, and crew, and maintaining a safe working environment for all personnel.

Partnering with the Managing Director on tracking and planning the monthly budget.

Building and sourcing props and set pieces for shows.

Subbing in for crew positions as needed.

Working default Monday–Friday hours, with occasional shifts adjusted to accommodate weekend show productions and rehearsals (typically 12:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.). Some evening availability required for special events.

Ideal Candidate Attributes:
Strong organizational and time management skills; self-starter mentality.

Experience with theatre arts organizations or performance venues.

Ability to work creatively and independently with excellent problem-solving skills.

Forward-looking thinker who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.

Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with leadership, directors, cast, and crew.

Capable of coordinating cross-departmental efforts.

Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.

Previous stage management experience.

Experience with budget management.

Minimum Qualifications:
3+ years of experience in production (experience with prop building is a plus).

Proficiency with sound systems, lighting systems, and band setup.

Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Compensation & Benefits:
This is a full-time, salaried position, with part-time training during the first 4 weeks. We are looking to start someone as soon as possible, with an official start date of May 1, 2025.

Starting salary: $55,000–$60,000
