Description:

The Technical Director position serves as the conduit for information flow from the client and project management teams to vendors, contractors, and installation technicians. The Technical Director is responsible for managing their own projects with minimal technical guidance from the Sr. Technical Director. Top level view of job-site safety and proper installation practices are a main focus for all projects.

Essential Duties:

Ability to travel and work on job site locations for extended periods of time.
Lead the technical advance, fabrication, installation, and technical documentation for any given experience
Delegate tasks to onsite foremen, technicians, assistants, etc.
Oversee compliance with safety practices both on the job-site and in the office
Draft technical manuals for use and maintenance of custom items built for clients
Maintain and update SOPs for install, strike, maintenance, and storage processes
Oversees all tech aspects for designated projects during pre-production & install.
Involved in design process during pre-production to understand build.
Manages install from a tech standpoint. Gives technical direction to tech staff in conjunction with PM
Create CAD drawings
Handles bidding out to bid shop, all bid shop correspondence, and value engineering with Designer as needed
Oversees rigging and equipment safety and inspections
Enforces OSHA Guidelines (OSHA training necessary)
Technical estimating and consulting
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises work of others, including planning, assigning and scheduling work, reviewing work and ensuring

quality standards, training staff and overseeing their productivity. May offer recommendations for hiring,

termination and pay adjustments, but does not have responsibility for making these decisions.

Availability:

July 2023- January 2024
Salary:

$1800/week
Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelor’s Degree – Field of Study – Technical Theatre/Technical Direction or equivalent experience.

Preferred: Vocational or technical training – Field of Study: welding, engineering, rigging, carpentry,

electronics, audio, construction, electrician. The knowledge needed for this position are often not found in

traditional college educations. Technical theatre education will be the closest thing, but so would any education

in audio, lighting, electronics, rigging, welding, carpentry, design, 3D modeling software. It’s a myriad of

technical skills that make this a helpful education.

EXPERIENCE:

5 to 7 years of experience in the technical entertainment field with 1 to 3 years of specific focus on experiential

installs and events. At least 2 years of supervisory experience.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid driver’s license required. OSHA and similar construction safety certification(s) helpful.

Key Competencies:

Basic knowledge of theatrical building environments – fly systems, rigging, rehearsal schedules, facility requirements, hanging/focusing lighting instruments, audio, running cabling, cable management, basic knots, awareness of other aspects of production and their needs from your position and from the space, basic carpentry, basic electrics, ability to interpret and create construction drawings, design drawings, light plots, ground plans, basic paperwork.
Portable power distribution – familiarity with system preferred
Holiday décor and lighting installation experience preferred
Solutions-based troubleshooting
Friendly and proactive personality
Ability to interface with clients, coworkers, and laborers to maintain a positive work environment
Organizational skills – in office and on-site
Excellent verbal communication skills and customer service – communicates through various mediums such as email, text, phone call, and in-person conversations.
Awareness of dangers and hazards associated with job functions and willingness to mitigate those risks
Expert troubleshooting of technical issues in a theatrical/production setting
Experience leading and managing a team
Work Environment: While on-site, frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or

working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters. Because of the time constraints of most of the department’s projects, the Technical Director will often be on-site and need to work in hot/humid, cold/freezing, rain, and snow conditions to complete the job before the deadline. While in-office, there is a rare presence of abnormal variations in temperature and exposure to outside conditions.

Physical Effort: Strenuous – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of heavy objects (approx. 50-

75 lbs.) and materials, or heavy hand tools. While on-site the Technical Director frequently operates heavy equipment and heavy hand tools. Standing for long periods of time, but often kneeling, bending, working from the back and at heights well over 50 feet. While in-office, physical effort is light.

Hazards

Frequent existing or potential hazards. Moderate existing or potential hazards. In office, there is very little exposure to hazards. While on-site, there is regular exposure to: working at heights over 50 feet, working in and around heavy equipment, exposure to chemicals and regular use of cutting tools such as saws and grinders.
