The Circus Project, a nonprofit circus school and community in Portland, Oregon, seeks a Program Director to envision and lead the next evolution of our education and artist development programs. Ideal candidates will be passionate about supporting contemporary circus artists within a social justice framework, be an excellent manager, budget savvy, and eager to initiate and engage in conversation and personal growth around equity and privilege.

Pay: $45,700 - $52,000 for full time salary, depending on experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Program Director is responsible for synthesizing input and setting the programmatic vision. The Program Director leads and sets the strategy for all circus education and artist development -- curriculum, coaching, class offerings and training programs, the student experience, studio facility and equipment, safety, and performances.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program & Facility Strategy (20%): Lead strategic planning and budgeting for programming and facility design and usage that align with The Circus Project’s mission and guiding principles. Develop education programs and policies that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and foster an affirming organizational culture that promotes continuous learning by students and staff. Set education team goals and priorities. Oversee program evaluation and tracking of metrics. Prepare regular program reports for the board of directors.
Student Experience (20%): Lead staff in stating the desired student experience, and work to ensure that The Circus Project’s students have that experience through studio policies, Learning Community Agreements, strategy, department management, the physical space, and student communication. Ensure students have channels to offer feedback, and that feedback is collected and analyzed. This includes attention to: student retention, cohesion between programs, front desk operations, communication with existing students--through email, face-to-face interactions, website, registration system, and other channels. Make choices about the physical space and organizational culture that accommodates a broad variety of students.
Department Direction (40%): Hire and manage education program managers who lead the following functions: classes, curriculum, coaching, student services, safety, facility, equipment, inventory, and performances. Support team in troubleshooting as necessary, and adapting to unforeseen challenges and opportunities.
Organizational Leadership (15%): Foster cohesion within the education team, and between program and other staff. Plan and facilitate all-staff trainings, meetings, and team-building activities. Plan and facilitate the weekly admin team meeting. Participate in projects, committees, and individual growth that advances EDI goalsCollaborate on the development of fundraising and marketing plans and messaging. Lead relationship-building with assigned major donors. Present programming updates at board meetings. Lead programming elements of organizational fundraising events. Represent The Circus Project in the greater circus and arts communities, locally, nationally, and internationally.
Other duties as needed (5%): The Circus Project is a dynamic and evolving organization. The Education Director is expected to adapt as needed to meet unforeseen challenges and opportunities.
Job description to be reviewed and updated at least annually. The Education Director responsibilities are expected to change and evolve along with the organization’s growth.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to view job duties through an equity lens
Enthusiasm for The Circus Project’s mission and programming
Deep knowledge of contemporary circus curriculum
Experience intersecting art and social justice
Familiarity with trauma-informed practices
Lived experience as a circus coach and/or artist
Demonstrated success managing teams
Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups with a variety of perspectives
Demonstrated ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences and communication styles
Ease with budgets and willingness to engage deeply with financial statements
Ease with technology. This job will require frequent use of:
