Summary

The Stage Carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation, and strike of scenery for all KCRep productions, as well as maintenance, support and communication through show runs. This position involves collaboration with the technical team and requires advanced carpentry skills, adherence to safety practices, and the ability to adapt to evolving production needs.

Requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Build and install scenic elements using traditional and advanced theatrical construction techniques
• Work with materials such as wood, metal, and plastics; operate a variety of tools and equipment safely
• Support rigging, soft goods installation, and on-site assembly as required
• Participate in load-ins and strikes for KCRep productions and events
• Follow technical drawings and collaborate with Technical Director, ATD, and Head Carpenter
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace
• Use proper PPE and ensure adherence to shop safety protocols
• Support KCRep’s mission, vision, and values, and contribute to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-racism) efforts

PRODUCTION RUN AND DECK MANAGEMENT DUTIES
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to call to unlock all necessary areas:
• Coordinate backstage crew assignments in partnership with the Assistant Stage Manager
• Oversee deck operations in collaboration with the ASM
• Set up and break down tech tables
• Manage theatre lighting before and after rehearsals and performances, including ghost light usage
• Assist lighting and sound departments with deck-related needs
• Act as liaison between stage management and the scene shop
• Install backstage carpeting where required
• Set up quick-change areas as needed
• Establish and maintain mopping schedule
• Supervise rail operations, ensuring safe and efficient use
• Ensure a safe and hazard-free deck and props environment for cast and crew

QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience working in professional theatrical scene shops or a related setting
• Proficiency in reading technical drawings and executing carpentry plans
• Familiarity with finish carpentry, welding, rigging, and theatrical construction
• Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment with or without reasonable
accommodation
• Comfortable working on ladders, personnel lifts, and in various shop or theater environments
• Effective communication and collaboration skills
• Openness to feedback, learning, and inclusive workplace practices
• Commitment to respectful communication, collaborative work, and a feedback-driven environment
• Self-motivated, proactive, and detail-oriented
