Job Description

TaleGate Theatre is inviting expressions of interest from a Scenic Designer & Maker to help us create an enchanting Winter Wonderland Workshop for families this Christmas. This is an exciting opportunity to design and dress immersive theatrical spaces in a pantomime-inspired style, blending custom-made scenic pieces with cleverly sourced or found items to produce a magical festive experience.

We are seeking a creative professional with:

Experience in pantomime-style scenery and props
Experience in immersive experience environments
Experience designing durable, family-friendly props and environments that can withstand audience interaction, support hands-on play and meet the practical needs of performers
Proven ability to dress spaces with attention to detail and atmosphere
Skills in both scenic construction and creative sourcing to achieve high-impact visuals within budget
Confidence in collaborating with our project manager and wider team during the build and fit up
Job Requirements
You'll help bring to life our Winter Wonderland which will feature six immersive, self-contained spaces, each fully enclosed and lined with hessian to create a neutral backdrop. These rooms will act as blank canvases, ready for your creativity to transform them into vibrant, magical environments that transport visitors straight into a festive world.

Key Dates -

Designs due early October with a site visit alongside the project manager during the same period.
Fit up dates 16th to 18th November with a team of workers provided to assist during build and installation.
Job Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated and highly self-sufficient creative professional who can take ownership of the full scenic process from concept to completion. You will be given a single, generous budget designed to comfortably accommodate ITC design rates for your fee (well above NMW) whilst still leaving substantial funds for materials, fabrication and any outsourced work. The project is expected to require approximately ten days of work spread across six to eight weeks, although we understand this may vary depending on your approach.

As part of the interview process, you will be asked to provide a detailed quote outlining your proposed approach and estimated costs for the project. We are looking for someone driven, resourceful and inspired by the challenge of using the available resources wisely to create a truly magical Winter Wonderland.
