Charlottesville Opera

Scenic Artist - Seasonal Position

Compensation: Hourly at $25.00, up to 40 hours per week, for a maximum duration of 4 weeks.

Schedule: June 2 - July 16, 2025

Travel and Housing:

Housing provided, either in a homestay (private bedroom and private bath, with access to kitchen and laundry) or a shared Airbnb (private bedroom).

Travel reimbursement up to $350 (reimbursed upon receipt of gas or air travel receipts).

Applicants must have their own car or arrange for local transportation.



Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb for extended periods of time.

Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry scenic elements and materials up to 50 pounds independently.

Comfortable working at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, or lifts.

Ability to perform repetitive motions such as brushing, rolling, stippling, and spraying paint.

Manual dexterity to mix paints, handle tools, and execute detailed scenic painting techniques.

Visual acuity to accurately mix colors, match samples, and paint detailed textures.

Ability to tolerate exposure to paints, solvents, and other scenic materials, with proper PPE.

Comfortable working in varying environments, including indoor shops, stages, and occasionally outdoor venues.

Ability to wear appropriate protective equipment, such as respirators, gloves, and eye protection, when required.



Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Scenic Designer and Production Manager to understand the design vision, texture, and finish requirements for each production.

Create paint samples and techniques for designer approval.

Develop a painting schedule and materials list based on scenic construction timelines.

Lead and supervise the paint crew, including scenic artists, interns, and overhire painters.

Delegate tasks to ensure efficient and timely completion of all scenic finishes.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized paint area.
