Geva Theatre, a LORT B regional theatre in the heart of Rochester, New York, seeks an Props Artisan to join its production team.
The Props Artisan works in conjunction with the Properties Supervisor to achieve the desired artistic vision on all assigned productions. Also responsible for Geva's core values of artistic courage, sustainability, excellence, boundless hospitality, empathy, and anti-racism and inclusion.
Please note: the start date for this job is early October, though interviews will begin in late- May.
DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITY
- Communicate regularly with the Properties Supervisor and props overhire to coordinate departmental efforts in the production of props, set decoration, and decorative elements.
- Participate in the prop build, load-in, set dress and strike of all productions.
- Construction, painting, acquiring, and finishing of all properties as needed, including hand props, paper goods, furniture, and set decorations for all productions.
- Repair, upholstering, and refinishing of properties as needed
- Ensure that props are safe for actor and audience
- Pulling props from stock as needed for productions, rental, or rehearsal, which includes transporting furniture to and from an offsite warehouse.
- Collaborate with all other production departments as needed to develop plans for cross-departmental projects
- Under the supervision of Properties Supervisor, help to maintain equipment, supplies, and stock items, and participate in the day-to-day maintenance of the prop shop and offsite properties warehouse
- Additional production-related duties as assigned by the Properties Supervisor.
TRAITS IN A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
- Familiarity with the theatrical process and best practices of script analysis, rehearsal schedules, material use, and installation.
- Demonstrated knowledge in safe operation of stationary and portable power tools and hand tools.
- Ability to read and interpret working drawings and renderings.
- Knowledge and skill in some/any of the following areas: woodworking, framing, finish carpentry, metal working, welding and bending, and furniture finishing, sculpture, casting and molding, upholstery, soft goods and sewing, crafting, or painting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, and the Internet as needed for research and execution.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for asking informed questions and presenting research information, and the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Ability to handle responsibility with little or no supervisor while displaying consistent expertise.
- Ability to drive a cargo can and/or box truck.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, energized, and quickly changing environment.
- Ability to work flexibly on some evenings, weekends, and the occasional holiday.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to crouch, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, stand and sit for extended periods of time, reach above, below and at neck level, have full range of neck motion, see near and far with good depth perception, and work indoors and outdoors.
- Occasional height work on ladder and/or genie up to 25+rsquo;.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Salary and benefits range from $17.00-$17.50 per hour.
