Description:

The Production Technician in Residence plays a key role in supporting a wide range of Academy performances across disciplines, providing expertise in sound, lighting, video, and stage operations. Working alongside our experienced full-time production team, the Technician will support technical needs for concerts, theatrical productions, dance performances, special events, and more. In addition to salary, the residency includes housing on Interlochen+rsquo;s beautiful northern Michigan campus, offering a truly unique chance to live, learn, and grow within a creative community committed to artistic excellence and education. This contract will go from late August 2025 to late May 2026.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities:

Set up, operate, and strike audio systems for rehearsals, performances, and special events. Duties include microphone placement, console operation, audio playback, live mixing, and troubleshooting.
Set up, focus, and operate theatrical and concert lighting systems. Responsibilities may include basic programming of lighting consoles and assisting with hang and focus calls for larger productions.
Set up and operate video recording and projection systems for live events, performances, and presentations.
Support small-scale lighting and/or sound design projects under the supervision of senior production staff, with potential opportunities for independent design work.
Assist with the safe setup and teardown of scenery, rigging equipment, and stage elements for productions and events.
Conduct regular inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs of technical equipment, and help manage inventory of audio, lighting, video, and staging gear.
Provide technical support during daily rehearsals, tech weeks, and performances, ensuring smooth operation and rapid troubleshooting as needed.
Promote and maintain a safe work environment by following proper safety procedures and ensuring that all activities comply with institutional policies and industry standards.
Actively participate in training opportunities to learn new equipment, software, and industry best practices.
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, supporting the overall success of Academy productions and the Presents Series.

Experience + Skills:
Bachelor+rsquo;s degree in Audio, Video, or Theatre Production.
MFA in Technical Theatre or a closely related discipline preferred.
Professional-level experience in technical production required, preferably within a performing arts center, professional theater company, or academic arts environment.
Hands-on experience with audio, lighting, video, and staging technologies in live performance settings.
Proficiency with audio consoles, microphones, PA systems, and digital playback equipment.
Working knowledge of lighting systems including conventional and LED fixtures, lighting consoles, and basic lighting design principles.
Experience with video capture, projection systems, and basic editing software preferred.
Basic rigging knowledge, with a commitment to safe rigging practices.
Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, productions, and deadlines simultaneously.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on collaborative teamwork.
Ability to follow detailed technical instructions and execute production plans with precision.
Dedication to maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and visiting artists.
Problem-solving mindset with flexibility to adapt to the fast-changing needs of a live arts environment.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and personal accountability.
