Production Manager, Seasonal Contractor
Reports to: General Director
Charlottesville Opera seeks applications for the position of Production Manager from individuals with experience in theatrical production and management. We seek a strong and resourceful leader who will help Charlottesville Opera uphold its reputation for producing high artistic quality opera and musical theater productions each summer in Charlottesville, Virginia, and as we expand our season to incorporate an additional chamber opera beginning in the Spring of 2025.
The Company
Charlottesville Opera is a nationally recognized professional opera company based in Charlottesville, VA. Formerly known as Ash Lawn Opera, the company hires professional singers to perform in grand traditional productions at the beautiful Paramount Theater, a renovated movie palace.
In addition to these professional singers, the company invites sixteen emerging artists to perform supporting roles and receive training to advance their craft. Productions are original mountings of well-known shows, conceived by the General Director, stage director, and design team.
Charlottesville Opera employs approximately 40 theater and musical professionals for its summer season and hires professional orchestra members and local choristers. The company presents between 16 and 18 live performances during its six-week summer season. Throughout the year, it offers a concert series, educational opera performances, and starting in Spring 2025, a new works chamber production.
Position Description Overview
The Production Manager is responsible for the technical implementation of Charlottesville Opera’s main stage productions (2 yearly at The Paramount Theater) and the New Works Initiative (at various venues). This senior leadership role works closely with the General and Artistic Director to execute and implement high-quality productions and performances.
Primary responsibilities include directing all production planning and operations in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner, maintaining high artistic standards, and ensuring thorough communication with design teams and department heads to deliver designs on time and within budget.
Position Details
Work Location: Remote, except during production and rehearsal periods, with limited in-person meetings requiring travel and accommodations at the company’s expense. Travel dates will be agreed upon with at least two weeks' notice.
In-Person Requirement: The position is entirely in-person during rehearsal and performance periods, with accommodations provided (private host housing or shared Airbnb). Travel reimbursement is negotiable based on distance. The Production Manager is responsible for in-town transportation in Charlottesville.

The Production Manager oversees stage management, technical teams, set, prop, and costume departments, production assistants, run crew, vendors, and freelance contractors.
Responsibilities
Production Planning and Implementation
Collaborate with the Scheduler to create and oversee production timelines.
Organize and lead production meetings for clear communication among teams.
Coordinate execution of production elements: scenery, props, costumes, lighting, and sound.
Oversee load-ins, load-outs, and strike processes efficiently and safely.
Manage production budgets and suggest adjustments based on actual expenses.
Source, contract, budget, and set up rehearsal spaces and other production needs.
Arrange tuning and moving of rehearsal and performance pianos.
Manage rental contracts for sets, costumes, props, and technical equipment.
Contract and coordinate supertitles for non-English productions.
Serve as the primary liaison with directors regarding technical needs and implementation.
Supervise rehearsal processes, orchestral setups, technical rehearsals, and performances.
Budgeting and Season Planning
Participate in season planning, considering production feasibility and development needs.
Collaborate with the General Director to establish and monitor budgets.
Negotiate contracts with vendors, service providers, and freelance personnel.
Track expenditures and provide regular budget updates.
Staff and Crew Management
Collaborate with venue staff to schedule and manage production teams.
Recruit, train, and supervise stage management teams and production assistants.
Provide leadership during rehearsals and performances, addressing production issues.
Rehearsal and Performance Operations
Coordinate technical and dress rehearsals and ensure seamless execution.
Troubleshoot issues during rehearsals and performances.
Work with stage management and venue staff to maintain a safe environment.
Health and Safety Compliance
Implement and enforce safety protocols.
Conduct risk assessments for setups, equipment, and personnel.
Train crew and cast on safety procedures.
Communication and Documentation
Act as the primary contact for production-related communications.
Maintain comprehensive production records and documentation.
Provide regular production updates to the General Director.
Production Rentals and Inventory Management
Update inventory of set pieces and props for rentals.
Track and maintain lighting gear inventory.
Inter-Departmental Needs
Provide technical support for company events and activities.
Coordinate technical needs for fundraising and PR events.
Qualifications
Education: BA/MFA in theater production, arts management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience: 3-5 years in opera, theater, or performing arts production management.
Skills:
Knowledge of opera production requirements.
Strong project management and budgeting skills.
Familiarity with theater technology and safety practices.
Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, Vectorworks) and Microsoft Office.
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a box truck.
Certifications: OSHA 10/30, ETCP certification preferred.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work long hours with a flexible schedule.
Production/Season Dates
Scalia/Ginsburg: March 15 – March 29 (Performances: March 28, 29)
Summer Season: May 28 – July 15 (1 day before first artist arrival, 2 days post-season)
Compensation and Benefits
Type: 1099 contract position.
Pay: $10,000 for summer season management; $2,000 for New Works Chamber Production management.
