Description:Job PurposeThe Human Race Theatre Company, recognized nationally for its innovative programming and new work development, seeks a Production Manager to lead and develop its production team. In collaboration with the Artistic Director, and guided by HRTC’s core values of promoting enlightenment, inclusion, and understanding through theatre, the Production Manager delivers these values through the successful technical execution of activities in the Loft Theatre and other HRTC spaces. The role requires strong communication, attention to detail, advance planning, and organizational skills. The Production Manager will interact regularly with visiting artists, AEA representatives, SDC paperwork, USA contracts, artists’ agents, and other production stakeholders. This position participates in both season planning and the day-to-day management of all technical disciplines. Success in this role requires: 3–5 years in an Associate Production Manager role or higher A working knowledge of theatre industry standards and practices A commitment to artistic and technical excellence Duties & Responsibilities Administration Advise the Artistic Director on production budgets, designers, and production parameters Read and analyze scripts for potential future seasons Create and maintain the season calendar and detailed production schedules (build/load-in through strike) Plan and contract overhire across departments as needed Maintain updated Teams folders of contacts, contracts, and production documentation Prepare and file production payroll; submit worker’s comp claims to Finance and Executive Director Communicate FOH, housekeeping, and security needs to landlord; share production calendars Attend weekly staff meetings, production meetings, meet & greets, opening nights, and other staff functions Coordinate visiting artists’ schedules with property manager Production Act as resource for Scenic, Prop, Lighting, Projection, Costume, and Sound Designers, assessing technical and budgetary feasibility and proposing solutions Maintain knowledge of design principles for an intimate ¾ thrust stage Approve scene shop construction methods, build/paint schedules, materials, mechanics, and overhire needs Support construction and strike preparation, including overhire and disposal coordination Maintain a safe working environment across all facilities and workspaces Prepare and manage individual AEA production reports Participate in pre-production activities to fully support the creative team Create and distribute preliminary production schedule, contact sheet, and pre-production paperwork Attend read-throughs, rehearsals, meetings, and performances as needed Schedule and lead pre-production and production meetings Review, approve, and submit production department receipts Ensure proper operation and safety of scenic elements; train staff and artists on specialized equipment Facilitate needs of outside organizations using HRTC spaces Be on-call during performances for technical emergencies Monitor performance reports and arrange for timely technical repairs Additional Expectations All HRTC employees are expected to: Adhere to company policies and procedures Work safely and maintain clean, organized workspaces Maintain a positive, respectful attitude Communicate regularly with supervisors about department needs Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet productivity standards Demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality Participate in HRTC events as needed Perform other duties as assigned Required Qualifications 3–5 years’ experience as a Production Manager, Assistant Production Manager, or Technical Director Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or similar drafting software In-depth knowledge of scenic construction methods and practices Working knowledge of theatrical audio, lighting, and projection systems/equipment Excellent oral and written communication skills with a positive, diplomatic approach Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail Demonstrated success managing budgets and meeting deadlines Knowledge of workplace safety standards (OSHA Certification preferred) Curiosity and commitment to advancing HRTC’s artistic and technical work Physical Requirements Prolonged computer use and seated work Walking, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 40 lbs. Typing and phone communication Ability to work in a semi-open office environment Sit for 2+ hours at a time Climb up to 3 flights of stairs Working Conditions Standard 40-hour work week; extended hours during production periods, including evenings, weekends, and holidays Collaborative theatre work environment with independent and team-based projects
