Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Technical Director and working with the Creative Team for Madama Butterfly, the Production Hair & Wigs is responsible for the organization, building, alteration, sourcing, and maintenance of the Hair & Wigs used in the production. The Production Hair & Wigs will collaborate with the Director and/or Designers during the rehearsal period to create, develop, and lead the maintenance of all hairstyles and wigs based on the Creative Team’s vision for the show. The work may include complex wig creations, basic hair styling for live performance, fittings and special effects, as determined by the production.

The Production Hair & Wigs will take the lead on all preparation at the Shop, then be part of the Technical and Dress rehearsals and Performances as part of the Running Crew.

The Production Wigs should have strong experience in theatre in Running Crew, Hair Styling and Wig Creation. They will attend all production meetings, fittings, technical rehearsals and post-show notes.

The candidate should be a self-starter and a collaborative team member, who is comfortable intuiting designer visions and making judgement calls. They will have a calm and flexible outlook and be diplomatic in dealing with fluctuations in schedule and artistic challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyze a script or libretto with the Creative Team, noting events that affect each character's appearance, to organize their creation and implementation for each scene
• Source, purchase or manufacture all wigs and hairstyles as desired by the Creative Team
• Adjust and Alter creation based on notes from Artistic Directors, Designers, Technical Directors, Stage Management and Performers
• Create a show bible with reference images for Performers’ intended hairstyles
• Working with the Technical Director, assist in the scheduling and operations of the Wigs & Hair Department to achieve the artistic vision
• Communicate with the Technical Director the hours required; and the hours used for pre-production work
• Attend all production meetings, room run, load-in, strike, dress rehearsals and post-show notes
• Teach Techniques and Operations to Performers and Running Crews
• Maintain Performers’ Hair and Show Wigs
• Stay within budget limitations for materials and labour as set forth by the Director of Artistic & Production and submit weekly expense reports and forecasts
• Adhere to Health and Safety Standards

• Superior communication and organizational skills
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
• Advanced level of proficiency in hair styling and wig creation/maintenance
• Comprehensive knowledge of theatrical practices
• Appreciation for live entertainment
• Experience with Microsoft 365/Sharepoint
• Must hold active membership in IATSE 118

Assets:
• Knowledge of traditional Japanese hair techniques

Salary: $49.96/h, in accordance with IATSE VOA Shop Agreement
