Description:Under general direction, manages, coordinates and provides event production management and support for the District’s Performing Arts Department productions; prepares and maintains an annual calendar of events for the District’s performance facilities; oversees and ensures the proper maintenance and upkeep of the District’s performance facilities; supervises staff and students; coordinates the technical support of college dance, theatre arts, and music productions, as well as special events, lectures, forums, student activities and community events in the District’s performance facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Manager, Performing Arts Production is responsible for planning, managing and coordinating all aspects of theater, dance and music department productions in the District’s performance facilities. Assignments are broad in scope and allow for a high degree of administrative discretion in their execution. Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high performance, customer service- oriented work environment which supports achieving District objectives and service expectations; provides leadership and participates in programs and activities that promote a positive employee relations environment. Plans, manages, oversees and provides technical direction for the District’s theater and dance department productions; provides advice and guidance on theater production elements; oversees and assists in prop construction and costume shop activities. Coordinates individual productions and supervises production meetings, rehearsals, and performances; provides scenery, lighting, audio, staging, rigging and the striking of equipment; manages program scheduling and performance calendars. Manages and participates in the development and administration of the District’s auditorium and Performing Arts budgets; participates in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitors production expenditures; implements budget adjustments; tracks requisitions; manages and approves purchase orders. Manages and sponsors Associated Student Body (ASB) production budgets; submits reallocations and writes ASB purchase orders; advises theatre and dance faculty when to consider use of ASB trust accounts for performance expenditures. Schedules and coordinates events and performances in the District’s performance facilities with District departments and staff, outside performing groups, community groups and the public; prepares and maintains annual calendar of events for the District’s performance facilities. Oversees technical and LTE staff and their scheduling; ensures proper coverage by creating weekly schedules for staff covering all daily events and shops; tracks assigned staff vacation and leaves; assesses need for overtime for non-Performing Arts productions. Oversees and ensures the proper maintenance and upkeep of the District’s performance facilities; makes recommendations on capital equipment purchases and necessary renovations; ensures proper maintenance and storage of stage equipment, sets, tools and hardware; researches and makes recommendations for vendors; negotiates orders for equipment and supplies as necessary. Manages and oversees student crews, including federal work study students and student assistants; creates and oversees their weekday and weekend work schedules and time sheets. Manages the hiring of production designers, technical staff, and box office staff, including LTEs. Conducts annual performance review for District’s Performing Arts technical staff. Assures compliance with temporary building codes and fire codes; enforces all safety and procedural rules for Performing Arts facilities and staff. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of: General operations and activities of a theater or auditorium. Coordination and management of performing arts productions. Methods, equipment and materials used in performing arts productions. Principles, practices and technical requirements of complex stage lighting and sound systems. Proper operation and maintenance of specialized theater production equipment. Stage craft and operation, including rigging, lighting, projection, carpentry, welding, painting and set construction. Principles and practices of stage design and construction. Drafting and plot making. Basic electrical, electronic and mechanical principles applicable to stage equipment. Federal, state and local laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to assigned areas of responsibility. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work. Principles and practices of effective supervision. Management skills and principles of supervision. Principles and practices of sound business communication. Outstanding verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Strong computer and theatrical technology skills (lighting, sound, projection, motor control). Ability to: Coordinate the daily activities and operations of a college theater. Coordinate, oversee and provide technical direction for performing arts productions. Read, understand and apply plans, plots, drawings, diagrams, blueprints, sketches and other stage directions. Design sets, props and lighting. Construct, paint and finish sets and props. Understand, interpret, apply and explain technical requirements and applicable safety regulations. Operate and maintain a variety of specialized theater production equipment. Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, reports, studies and other written materials. Exercise sound, expert independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District management, staff, administrators, faculty, staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work. Education, Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in theater arts or a closely related field; and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in theater production; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience working in a lead or supervisory role in theater production is desired. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
