IS LOOKING FOR AN ARTIST

To direct the Préau, National Drama Center of Normandy - Vire, from January 1, 2026
Applications from an artist, or a pair of artists, are admissible.

The fundamental mission of a drama center is theatrical creation. It is a place of reference, regional, national and international where all the dimensions of theater meet: research, writing, creation, diffusion and transmission. It constitutes a privileged place of access for the public to theater in the diversity and the topicality of its aesthetics.
All of the public interest missions attached to the CDN are defined by the specifications and responsibilities, established by the decree of May 5, 2017.

Le Préau is located in Vire-Normandie, a new commune of 17,411 inhabitants in the heart of the Virois bocage, halfway between Caen and Mont-Saint-Michel in the southwest of Calvados.

Its location brings it to a rural area, at the crossroads of the departments of Calvados, Manche and Orne. The local presence and influence of Le Préau in its surrounding area constitute an important uniqueness of the project.
Furthermore, the history and identity of Le Préau are also marked by an important address to young people and in particular to adolescents.
The missions specific to the CDN must be embodied according to these strong axes which constitute the richness of the establishment. Candidates will therefore be keen to engage and invest in the region through a dynamic of cooperation with local stakeholders (communities, community networks, etc.), and by establishing privileged partnerships with structures likely to bring together young and adolescent audiences.

The National Drama Center of Vire is an LLC. The average operating budget for the years 2022, 2023 is around 2.4 million euros, with a permanent team of 20 employees. The Préau is a facility equipped with a 618-seat performance hall, a rehearsal room, a workshop, a storage space and a space for the team's offices.
These spaces are located in the cinema-theater building on Place Castel, whose specificity is to house the two entities in the same architectural ensemble.

Candidates will send electronically by midnight on May 11, a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and a presentation of their artistic career, as well as a report on their broadcasting of their last 3 seasons, to:
• Mr. General Director of Artistic Creation (DGCA), for the attention of Guilhem Chabas:[email protected] ;

• Mr. Director of Cultural Affairs of Normandy (DRAC Normandie) to the attention of Véronique Fricoteaux: [email protected] ;

• Mr. President of the Regional Council of Normandy to the attention of Jefferson DESMOULAINS: [email protected] ;

• Madam Mayor of Vire Normandie to the attention of Cédric Dolet: [email protected] ;

• Mr. President of the Departmental Council of Calvados to the attention of Hugues Marechal: [email protected] ;

Four to six candidates will be preselected, after consultation between the State, the Normandy Region, the City of Vire-Normandie and the Department of Calvados, to develop an artistic and cultural project.
The CDN's mission and specifications and a guidance note presenting the structure and its location will be provided to them. They will be invited on site to learn about the tool and its environment and to meet the Préau team and public partners.
They will have to finalize their artistic and cultural project by the beginning of September and will be invited to present it to a jury composed of representatives of the various partners at the beginning of October.

At the end of the selection procedure, the artist or artists selected by the jury must receive approval from the Minister of Culture, to take up their duties on January 1, 2026, for an initial four-year term.
