Little M by Anders Duckworth

About Little M

The Place and The REcreate Agency are co-producing Little M, a new dance piece by Anders Duckworth for young people aged 9+ and their families. Little M is a radical reimagining of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, based on mythologies of transformation and the sea.

The work takes the lead character’s transformation between forms as inspiration for how trans experiences can be understood and communicated with young people, and will be a celebration of difference and acceptance.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a dancer who identifies as trans, non-binary, or who expresses their gender in another way beyond the perceived binary, to take a leading role in the Research & Development period of Little M.

The R&D will be primarily led by Anders Duckworth (they/them, Lead Artist). The dancer will play an integral part of exploring storytelling in Little M and will have input on how we arrive at the final narrative. The dancer needs to be:

Confident in using their voice, acting experience a plus
Confident collaborating with a small team at the early stages of an idea
Comfortable discussing their experience of gender
Confident engaging in a process focused on work for young people, prior experience of working with young people is a plus
Confident working with objects

We appreciate identities can be a challenging topic to discuss, so we can offer trans-led pastoral support that will be provided throughout the creation where needed.

Dates:
18th June: Audition Workshop at The Place
11-14th July: Studio time at The Place
25th-27th August or 5-7th September: Theatre time at The Place (date TBC)

Fee:
£550/week or £135/day

The Place (16 Flaxman Terrace, London, WC1H 9AT) is located between Kings Cross St. Pancras and Euston stations and has gender neutral bathrooms and changing facilities.

After the R&D period, we will be applying to an Arts Council England Project Grant in order to continue creating and to tour the production. There will be the opportunity for the selected dancer to have a conversation about potentially continuing to work on this production if both parties are interested.

To apply, please complete the Google Form. You will need to outline why you would like to be a part of this production, include your CV and a showreel. If you would like to apply in an alternative format, please get in touch with Hayley Miranda at [email protected].

The deadline to apply is 12th June at 6pm.
