Description:SummarySummary: Des Moines Metro Opera is a major summer opera festival located in Indianola, IA. The company produces 3-4 new productions each season in a summer repertory schedule, presented within the intimate 467-seat theatre at the Blank Performing Arts Center. Our 53rd season includes Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: • Assist the Lighting Designer(s) in efficient and accurate implementation of repertory lighting for three operas. • Create and maintain accurate paperwork and drawings, including focus notes, sections, deck maps, and magic sheets for each specific production. This includes developing paperwork for repertory changes. • Combine all lighting plots into one plot for the festival with all obstructions (scenery / video projectors) clearly identified. • Create an archival plot of the current season. • Work with the Head Electrician to ensure that the work completed by the electrical crew (2 staff electricians, 2 interns, 1 programmer) is to the Lighting Designer’s specifications • Maintain the integrity of the lighting design for all productions during the season • Call / supervise daily repertory change-over which includes tech rehearsals and the run of shows • Confirm all cues and any special effects are operating prior to performances • During performances, watch any special effects and be on headset for any issues that arise. • Attend all relevant meetings including bi-weekly production meetings and post tech meetings • Other duties normally associated with a Lighting Supervisor or Assistant Lighting Designer position(s) to be performed on an “as needed” basis determined by the Director of Production Dates of Employment: Sunday, May 11 – Monday, July 21, 2025. Compensation: $1,150/week during the festival season, overtime after 50 hours at a rate of $27.60/hour. Preseason work will be paid at a rate of $23.00/hour. $300 travel stipend to be paid upon arrival. DMMO will provide a single bedroom in an air conditioned two-bedroom apartment during the festival season. Qualifications and Skills Any Combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to: • Assistant light design experience is necessary • Ability to work in a fast paced environment • Minimum BA/BFA in Theatre or equivalent professional experience • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Extensive experience with Lightwright or VectorWorks • Experience with moving lights • Experience calling focus and working in a repertory production venue • Experience working in a fly-house • Extensive knowledge of ETC EOS family consoles Physical Requirements and Working Conditions • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted or with the help of a team • Work includes periods of standing, working in low or bright light, and climbing stairs/ladders.
