Summary

Lead Carpenter reports to David Geffen School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theatre (DGSD/YRT) Technical Directors. Carries out shop carpentry duties while maintaining high standards for safety and craftsmanship.
1. Reads, interprets, and adjusts shop drawings and AutoCAD drawings.
2. Constructs complex scenery.
3. Communicates with Technical Director to provide and obtain information relating to the materials and methods used to execute designs.
4. Develops and adjusts cut lists.
5. Uses a variety of complex tools, processes, materials, and equipment in completing assigned projects. 6. Assists in maintaining the safety and efficiency of all scene shop operations.
7. Prioritizes and performs maintenance and repair of scene shop, tools and stage facilities.
8. Participates in the transportation, installation, strike and disposal of scenery.
9. Supervises appropriate staff and students.
10. Attends appropriate meetings.
11. Works occasional nights, weekends and holidays.
12. May perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s degree; or two years of related work experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or little or no work experience with an M.F.A. in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Professional or graduate-level experience as a scenic carpenter. The ability to execute scenic designs for theatre productions. Carries out duties while exercising a high degree of autonomy and discretion, maintaining high standards for safety and craftsmanship. Handles and moves scenery pieces. Valid driver's license. Stand for long periods. Hold and operate hand, air and power tools. Repeatedly bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, squat and crouch. Use a respirator. Repeatedly lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 lbs. Climb stairs and ladders and work effectively at elevations up to 80'. Drive cargo van and departmental truck.
