Job Description / Duties
Main Purpose and Function

This highly skilled, specialized technical work involves the installation, operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of all flown equipment/scenery/performers using the in-house counter-weight fly system, chain hoists and/or any other form of lifting equipment/scenery/performers for use in a production. The incumbent plans, coordinates, operates and supervises crews working with in-house fly/rigging systems, and may include overseeing contractors providing repair/maintenance services.

In addition, the incumbent provides technical advice to lessees, organization representatives and theatre management to ensure optimum presentation of events and activities involving the theatres’ systems, imported (rental) systems or a combination of both. An incumbent of this class exercises a high degree of independence regarding their actions and judgment in all related technical work including planning, advising, safety and supervision of crews. Assignments are received from the Senior Manager, Production who evaluates work performance in terms of the attainment of technical and operational objectives.

The incumbent will be based out of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, however, will be able and expected to work in all VCT venues. Reporting to: Senior Manager, Production.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

Evaluates in-house systems and equipment with respect to operational demands and safety; develops with their supervisor annual maintenance, repair, overhaul, replacement and upgrade plans and schedules.
Performs and/or supervises maintenance, repairs, overhauls, operations, installations, and upgrades. Executes the proper storage and security of equipment.
Provides internal and external users with a variety of advice and assistance on matters related to presenting events at the theatres. This work may include shifting a proposed lineset schedule to offer better efficiency on setups/strikes, number of crew required for setup/operation and strike, safe rigging practices, chalking the floor.
Maintains a positive relationship with clients through effective communication.
Plans, coordinates and supervises event installations and operations; operates theatre’s counter-weight fly system as required by the event.
Ability to solve and trouble-shoot technical problems which may arise during an event.
Supervises and coordinates the work of crews assigned, trains new and unfamiliar crew members and provides leadership in establishing high standards of operating efficiently, safe work practices and customer service.
Assists other stage and/or theatre departments where required.
Researches and provides information for budget submissions.
Checks, maintains, orders and replaces stock and equipment and prepares and maintains records of work performed.
Performs related work as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills
Minimum Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

Completion of two-year college-level related technical diploma or the equivalent, and at least ten years full-time experience at an equivalent level of responsibility in the core area of work following completion of post-secondary education.
ETCP Certified Rigger - Theatre, or be able to complete the aforementioned course, and receive a certificate of qualification within the 12 month probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, equipment, tools and materials utilized in the provision of counter-weight fly systems, chain-hoists and theatrical rigging in theatre complexes.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions required.
Sound knowledge of all applicable collective agreements, codes, regulations, policies, and operating procedures governing the work performed.
Ability to perform skilled maintenance and repair work on the equipment and systems listed above.
Ability to work from plans, drawings, and sketches.
Ability to meet, communicate effectively with and assist internal and external customers in achieving their objectives, and interact in a positive manner with a diverse clientele.
Ability to effectively lead and supervise the work of large crews under demanding and pressured conditions; ability to work to deadlines and with irregular schedules.
Ability to prepare and maintain records, material and equipment estimates and order same as required.
Skilled in the use of the variety of tools, equipment, materials, and systems involved in stage productions.
Be comfortable operating a computer and working on technical drawings.
Ability to perform all duties to a high standard and be able to support the needs of the customer with minimal supervision.
Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule that includes nights and weekends. Excellent time management skills
Portrays a polished, professional image.
Must work well under pressure and be able to manage deadlines.
Ability to lift heavy objects
Ability to work at heights.

Fall Arrest
ETCP Certified Rigger - Theatre

Other desirable qualifications:

Chain Hoist maintenance and repair.
