Description:About the RoleThe Head Carpenter will be employed for all shows and events requiring the use of the Stage Department at the Paramount Theatre. Events include Broadway shows, corporate events, dance, comedy, musical acts, and more. This position works closely with the Technical Director to ensure safe operations and involves supervising local crews, assigning tasks, collaborating with other stage departments, and managing production advance, load-in, load-out, and run-of-show duties. The ideal candidate will be able and willing to work across all departments in the theater. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned. Manage and assist with all aspects of Stage Operations on show nights, from Load In through Load Out. Assist with unloading stage equipment from trucks, including trusses, lights, road boxes, video panels, cable boxes, chain motors, set pieces, rolling carts, and other AV equipment. Equipment may need to be pushed, pulled, or carried up to 200 ft. Efforts are made to roll equipment whenever possible. Run cues in various conditions, including low light, strobe, fog, and other limited-visibility environments. Read stage layout specifications and blueprints; confer with road crews to determine set, prop, lighting, and sound equipment needs. Serve as the primary backstage contact with clients, touring production staff, and tour managers via phone, email, and in-person. Oversee all departments on stage, assigning positions based on skill and seniority. Ensure adherence to schedule, breaks, crew management, and safe work environment. Maintain stage area to ensure a safe and clean workspace. Monitor and manage show operations for safety and efficiency. Distribute and explain day-of-show production needs to all production staff. Assist with venue policies and procedures. Support new hire paperwork and orientation. Collaborate with the Technical Director on advancing shows, site surveys, estimates, payroll, maintenance schedules, and related duties. Qualifications Working knowledge of traditional stage equipment and departments. Demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to work collaboratively with house crew, IATSE crews, touring crews, and clients. Experience running Broadway shows and cues. Ability to work with the Technical Director to prioritize duties. Strong leadership skills with crews of varying sizes. Flexibility to adapt to changing show priorities and schedules. Ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted and push/pull up to 100 lbs. Ability to work safely and predictably under stressful conditions and long hours. Self-motivated and proactive in assignments; able to work independently. Physical Requirements This is an on-call, as-needed role with no set schedule. Hours vary based on company activity. The position is highly physical and requires: Balancing, bending, carrying, climbing, crawling, reaching, squatting, twisting. Lifting up to 50 lbs alone; pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. Long hours (10–12 hour days common; occasionally up to 16 hours). Breakdown of activity: Standing: ~30% (dynamic, intermittent with walking; surfaces vary: concrete, gravel, earth, linoleum, hardwood, plywood, carpet). Walking: ~30% (same varied surfaces as above).
