JOB SUMMARY

The Granville Island (GI) Head Stage Carp is a permanent regular part-time position and a key member of our production install, running crew, and strike teams. The GI Head Stage Carp ensures the safe and smooth operation of all scenic installs and strikes. They work each of the performances backstage, operating the fly system, or moving props and scenery. They have excellent communication skills and are experienced in leading install and running small and medium size crews. They are a team player and self-motivated individual who works well with and without supervision. The GI Head Stage Carp takes ownership of the venue and leads the way in identifying needs for maintenance of the venue and/or equipment. They possess excellent organizational and time management skills, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations. Must be flexible and inclusive in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.

We are looking for a creative, outgoing, and enthusiastic person who has a passion for theatre. The successful applicant will have a broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products. They will have a generous and warm personality making the cast feel comfortable and safe as they manage the deck for each performance. The GI Head Stage Carp will have a capacity for leadership and teamwork as they coordinate the backstage choreography of set pieces, flying scenery, and props for oftentimes large and dazzling theatrical productions.

This is a unionized position under the Arts Club Theatre Company/I.A.T.S.E. 118 Collective agreement. Generally, this position will be part of every show’s running crew at the GI Stage, working on each performance. The position reports to the Technical Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform the role of Head Carp on GI show running crew as required
• Supervision of load in and load out crew as well as running crew
• Document and track all show-related configurations
• Give regular feedback on status of work as well as estimate assigned work.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment.
• Advise and assist with on-going stage & scenery maintenance
• Assist with organization and purchasing of all consumables
• Advise and assist on theatre rentals when required
• Assist with occupational safety and health of workers
• Produce and distribute Technical Reports

Qualifications / Required Skills
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products
• Working operational knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and the set-up, rigging and strike of scenery
• Able to supervise load in & load out crews
• Able to supervise running crew during technical rehearsals and run of show
• Able to read and understand designer blueprints

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

• At least 2 years experience in a professional theatre backstage setting
• Able to work at heights / climb ladders
• Able to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver heavy loads, either alone or with assistance from others
• Valid Driver’s License, able to drive a 5-ton truck

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

 Salary: $32.87/hr. (according to IATSE Collective Agreement Sept. 24-27)

 Employment type: Part-time regular* (according to IATSE Collective Agreement)

*Work is based on the regular GI stage programming season of Arts Club shows and rentals.
*Annual work schedule can more or less be given a year in advance, with additional options to fill in additional shifts in slow periods.
*During Scenic Installations and Tech weeks there will be work scheduled in excess of 40 hours per week
*Overtime hours worked can be banked and paid out at the employees discretion
*Work will be evenings and weekends primarily.
*Primarily you will work at the Granville Island Stage

 Option to be included in IATSE RRSP Matching Program.
 Comprehensive Benefits Package through IATSE Local 118.
 After three months of employment, 10 Days PTO will be provided per fiscal year for illness and emergency.

Where will preference be given?
• Preference will be given to candidates whom are members of IATSE local 118
• OFA Level 1 certificate
• Pyrotechnic and Firearms certificate
• Any past experience as a stage carpenter
• Any past experience working with traditional theatrical rigging systems.
