Description:

We are looking for a Prop Maker (Grade 1) with particular skills and experience in furniture making, carpentry, metal work and small scale mechanical prop making to join the National Theatre Workshop Team.

Purpose of the role:

The purpose of this role is to manufacture to a high standard, modify and repair props in accordance with requirements of the Designer and Director using a wide range of materials and tools. Work is normally carried out in the prop workshop and on the stages; but may be required elsewhere in the National or at designated outside venues.

From time to time you may be upgraded to the post of Prop Making Coordinator. The purpose of this role is to take responsibility for managing the flow of show work through the workshop for a particular production from the week before fit-up until press night. To manage and schedule allocated resources and staff to that end.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Significant experience of professional prop making. To be highly skilled in the main prop making disciplines with a good knowledge of, and technical ability in, the use of several other craft making techniques, materials, and finishes.
Demonstrate the ability to manage themselves and others to complete tasks on time.
Have a good knowledge of working in a workshop environment including knowledge of Health and Safety and COSHH in the context of a workshop
A good awareness and understanding of sustainability and/or the Theatre Green Book
Demonstrate good communication skills.
