Description:Job Title: Director of SoundLocation: Athens Theatre – DeLand, Florida Type: Full-Time Reports to: Producing Artistic Director Overview The historic Athens Theatre, a premier destination for live entertainment in Central Florida, seeks an experienced and collaborative Director of Sound. This full-time leadership role is both hands-on and strategic, responsible for delivering exceptional audio quality across a wide range of programming, including theatrical productions, concerts, and rental events. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with strong communication and problem-solving skills to help shape extraordinary audience experiences. Key Responsibilities Design, implement, and operate sound systems for theatrical productions, concerts, and events Operate the sound system console during all performances and events Create sound designs, including QLab programming and cue editing for productions Set up and manage live band configurations for musicals and special events Maintain and repair all audio equipment and systems Collaborate with creative teams and clients to achieve artistic and technical goals Advance and manage audio logistics for incoming productions and rentals Maintain inventory of all sound equipment and ensure it is restored post-rental and post-live theatrical productions Ensure safety compliance and uphold venue technical standards Coordinate with the Lighting Director/Assistant Technical Director and external technicians for efficient production execution Support benefit productions, educational programs, and other in-house events as needed Qualifications Proficiency with digital and analog mixing consoles (especially Allen & Heath SQ series) Experience with wireless microphone systems, QLab (v5 preferred), playback systems, and audio networking Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment effectively Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends Passion for using sound to create meaningful live experiences Preferred Qualifications 4+ years of live sound experience in theatre, concerts, or events—or a degree focused in Sound Engineering or Theatrical Production Familiarity with ADA compliance and assistive listening systems Our Equipment Includes Sound Consoles: Allen & Heath SQ7, SQ6 with GX 48/16 and DX 16/8 PA System: Martin Audio Line Array with four 18" cardioid subwoofers Wireless Mics: 28 Sennheiser EW-DX SKQ1-9 body packs Assistive Listening: ListenTalk Technologies transceiver kit Software & Interfaces: QLab 5, Tascam Series 208i Computers: Mac Studio and Mac Mini Compensation $40,000 annually (pre-tax); increases to $42,000 after a 90-day trial period Start Date We are seeking to fill the Director of Sound position as soon as a qualified candidate becomes available. Our goal is for the selected individual to train under the current Director, whose tenure concludes on June 30.
