DESCRIPTION
The Director of Recreation Classes and Youth Programs (RCYP) manages the daily operations for a specialized program of adult and youth serving recreation classes and a youth serving summer day camp. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action. Supervises recreation program leaders / instructors. Provides recommendations for the development of program budgets and typically, oversees implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory and other resources. Makes recommendations for policy changes.
The Director of RCYP establishes unit priorities, goals, objectives and standards for an ever growing curricula currently comprising 450 adult and youth education class offerings per year, along with a 10-week summer youth day camp serving 1200 campers. Develops, implements and monitors unit budgets, inventory, services and policies. Leads staff in introducing new and innovative curriculum and modifying/improving existing curriculum to meet ever evolving student and campus needs. Sets policies, procedures and standards of safety for all Recreation department youth-serving programs to ensure the safe supervision of minors.
The Director of RCYP manages the accountability and stewardship of financial and physical resources in keeping with departmental and organizational goals. Oversees the hiring, training and performance evaluation of both career and part-time staff. Advises student leaders in Martial Arts/Combative/Weaponry clubs recognized through the Center for Student Involvement on the development and implementation of programs, applicable policies and procedures, risk management, issues management, goal setting, leadership development and organization management.
The Director of RCYP manages the following programs through the coordinated achievements of career staff:
-Specialized adult education classes for UCSD students, faculty, staff and community in the following areas: sports, martial arts, dance, circus arts, Arts/DIY.
-Knock Around Youth Day Camp for children of students, staff, faculty and community members
-Youth instructional programs for children of students, staff, faculty and community members in the following areas: Sports, Martial Arts, Dance, Circus Arts, Arts/DIY. These career staff supervise approximately 65 student and 60 non-student program leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Excellent supervisory skills and experience prioritizing workload, delegating responsibilities, recruiting, interviewing, selecting, training, motivating and performance managing full time staff and a large roster of student staff and part time staff.
Strong knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Thorough understanding and demonstrated experience managing adult and youth recreation class curriculum development and delivery. Specific knowledge in all programming categories and specific experience developing instructors in one or more of the following programming categories; sports, martial arts, dance, circus arts, and Arts/DIY.
Strong business administration skills. Experience developing and implementing budgets for both fee funded and income supported operations. Ability to analyze and interpret data and prepare long-range plans and budgets. Experience monitoring revenue and spending reports and modifying operations to stay within approved budgets.
Proven ability to develop and manage a comprehensive risk management program at the programmatic and departmental level for adult and youth recreation classes and youth serving day camp programs. Detailed and specific knowledge of and implementing and enforcing youth protection best practices and policies. Proven ability to plan for and manage crisis situations.
Demonstrated experience managing a large and diverse youth serving day camp program.
Knowledge of registered student org advising. Knowledge of best practices related to martial arts, combative and weaponry classes and clubs on a university campus.
Strong knowledge of campus policies and procedures. Experience developing and delivering recreation instructional programs that appeal to and meet the student development needs of undergraduate and graduate students in a campus environment. Experience in understanding the underlying rationale, interpreting, applying and explaining campus and industry policies and procedures.
Demonstrated strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally in non-routine situations. Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to appropriately exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility and patience, and to successfully interact with diverse student body, university faculty and staff and the community and ability to facilitate and maintain effective relationships. Experience enhancing the visibility and reputation of a adult and youth class program and day camp to attract staff and participants, generate funding and organizational support, and building a strong program recognition on campus.
Strong client service minded focus, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills. Demonstrated independent judgment, strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills. Proven, effective problem-solving skills, including ability to identify problems, and to propose, analyze and implement solutions.
Thorough proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties. Competence using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Zoom, Innosoft Fusion, CampDoc and staff scheduling software.
Ability to lead adult and youth recreation classes and day camp programs as needed.
Safe competent driver with clean driving record with proven ability to train staff to safety transport passengers in University owned vehicles.
Uses highly developed and creative problem solving skills to deliver and foster a strong service orientation, program management, and sound judgment and decision-making; uses strong critical thinking skills to develop original ideas, in a varied and challenging environment.
Thorough demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Excellent verbal and writing skills to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, and to compose clearand concise correspondence, promotional pieces, performance reviews, reports and procedures.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Check.
Must be available to work weekends, Holidays and extended hours.

It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
