Description:

Travel and Housing:

Housing provided, either in a homestay (private bedroom and private bath, with access to kitchen and laundry) or a shared Airbnb (private bedroom).

Travel reimbursement up to $350 (reimbursed upon receipt of gas or air travel receipts).

Applicants must have their own car or arrange for local transportation.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 25+ndash;40 pounds (e.g., costume bins, garment bags, sewing machines).

Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods of time.

Manual dexterity for detailed handwork (sewing, stitching, altering garments).

Ability to sit and sew or perform detailed work for prolonged periods.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks (e.g., pinning, hand stitching, ironing).

Visual acuity for close-up work (reading measurements, hand sewing, costume repairs).

Ability to work in confined spaces such as dressing rooms, quick-change areas, and backstage hallways.

Ability to assist performers with quick costume changes, sometimes in low-light or fast-paced environments.

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as production schedules require.

Ability to tolerate typical backstage environments (heat, crowding, low lighting, occasional noise).

Responsibilities:

Assist the Costume Coordinator in coordinating rental costumes and needs for Carmen and Pirates of Penzance and attend all fittings as required. Assist in performing all needed alterations of all purchased, rented, and borrowed costumes.

Assist and run wardrobe for Dress Rehearsals and Performances.

Assist with the unpacking and packing up of all rental costumes and prepping shipments back to the appropriate rental companies.

Assist and oversee the transfer of costumes from the Costume Shop to the Theater as well as setup, strike and supervision of costume shop and supplies.

Maintain communication and establish a good working relationship with directors, designers, stage managers, technical personnel, venue personnel, orchestra, and singers, in order to satisfy the artistic and principal goals

of Charlottesville Opera.

Attend all crew calls, load-in, set-up, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, strike and load-out as needed for each production.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a costume shop, accomplished in performing alterations and fittings, time management skills, experience working with singing artists, and a positive work outlook.
