Job Summary:
Oversees the delivery of a broad range of programs within the Music and Art Department of the North and South Carolina Division; plans, develops, oversees, and supervises programs in areas designated by the Divisional Music and Arts Director; collaborates with the Divisional Music and Arts Director to realize the achievement of the ministry-centered focus of the department.

Program Development and Implementation Responsibilities (35%)

Plans and implements all contemporary music, related education and production specific programs to fit the objectives of the Music and Arts department. Initiates and implements new programs and activities with the approval of the Divisional Music and Arts Director that support, enhance and realize the objectives of the ministry-centered focus of the department.

Ensures the evaluation of programs on a continual basis and ensures that programs/activities respond to the participant’s needs and the department’s mission.

Serves as leader for designated divisional music and arts ensembles; instructs and conducts ensembles; manages music and arts equipment to ensure that the division’s needs are met.

Instructs program participants individually and in groups on the proper use of instruments or other music and arts resources; serves as conductor/leader using gestures to shape the music being played, communicating desired tempo, tone, color, pitch, volume, and other performance aspects. Take informed decisions on ways to improve and maintain high quality output.

Plans and schedules auditions, rehearsals and performances; creates plans for rehearsals; positions members within groups to obtain balance among instrumental sections; studies scores, scripts, routines, pieces etc. achieving detailed and informed artistic interpretations.

Plans and organizes music and arts presentations, under the direction of the Divisional Music and Arts Director, for Divisional Youth Councils prior to youth councils and assists with planning the music and arts components for youth councils’ meetings in cooperation with the Divisional Youth Secretary.

Assists with developing content for special events by embracing a particular style, theme or artistic concept.

Identify locations and establish music programs in clubs and corps around the division.

The ability to control and maintain a recording studio and provide sound engineering and audio-visual support for the division’s programs and messaging. Tasked at the discretion of the DMD and Divisional Youth Secretary.

Initiate a schedule of income generating teaching platforms using instrument specialism, production courses, workshops and adult training opportunities.

Direct all divisional Praise and Worship, including; praise bands, contemporary music output and the development of new leaders, artists and song writers.

Identify AV requirements in the field and support corps officers in the maintenance, installation and set-up of the production equipment. Tasked at the discretion of the DMD and Divisional Youth Secretary.

Program Support Responsibilities (30%)

Maintains an environment that facilitates the achievement of the program outcomes.

Develop strategies to ensure young people and adults of the NSC Division are encouraged to participate in a variety of programs and activities provided by the department and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in the program area(s).

Demonstrates leadership to ensure conduct, success and development of participants; promotes, stimulates, and encourages church and program participation.

Recruits participants to the Salvation Army corps and divisional music and arts programs – works closely with Crosslink and B&G clubs of America, offering workshops and programs in local settings.

Develops links with professional institutions for the benefit of our programs.

Travels to meet the program needs of the department and the Division.

Camp Conservatory and Christmas Responsibilities (20%)

Serves as administrative staff for the music conservatory portion of Summer C& supervises Camp Music staff to ensure the safety and proper participation of campers; lives out at Camp Walter Johnson for six weeks annually during Summer Camp.

During Summer Camp, instructs participants individually and in groups on the proper use of instruments or other music and arts resources; serves as conductor using gestures to shape the music being played, communicating desired tempo, tone, color, pitch, volume, and other performance aspects.

Develops curriculum and schemes of work in the areas of contemporary instrumental music and music technology software

Plays musical instruments as a part of the Music and Arts department band in order to promote goodwill and raise awareness for The Salvation Army during the Christmas holiday season and other times as needed; travels as needed for these events.

Administrative Responsibilities (15%)

Oversees proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted, breakdowns participation figures, notable achievements and other relevant issues.

Completes administrative and support assignments as assigned by the Divisional Music and Arts Director.

Other Responsibilities:
Serves as a music and arts leader in the local corps and lives as an example of a Salvationist in good standing.

Provides oversight and participates in loading/unloading and set-up/tear down for conservatory and various special events.

By mutual agreement, serve as a staff member of the Territorial Music Institute.

Plays and/or sings and/or dances and/or acts in Territorial functions (Territorial band, or Territorial songsters or Territorial creative arts as requested and approved by the Divisional Commander).

Participates in appropriate Divisional & Territorial events, committees, and activities.

Prepares and leads music ensembles for special events, i.e. Congress, rallies, Christmas, employee events.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of The Salvation Army.

Ability to serve as an example of Salvationism and to demonstrate interest in the spiritual well-being of all youth.

Ability to control and maintain a recording studio.

Demonstrated ability to plan and implement effective artistic programs.

Demonstrate excellent instrumental skills in piano, percussion, guitar or voice

Knowledge of effective leadership skills, including negotiation, problem solving, and decision making.

Functional knowledge of principles and practices of music and arts education.

Ability to organize, teach, and conduct music and arts groups of all ages and levels.

Ability to develop and implement programs and activities attractive to youth and in alignment with the mission of The Salvation Army.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a music education or performance education or a related field

and

Two years practical experience in music and arts programming or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

and

must be a Salvationist in good standing with The Salvation Army.
