Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Technical Director to oversee all physical (set) and technical aspects of our productions, co-productions and educational programs. The ideal candidate will have experience in theatre production, set design and build, and innovative lighting and sound design. The candidate will also have strong organizational skills, collaborative spirit and possess the ability to train volunteers to support all aspects of executing the requirements of the role. This role is essential in bringing our creative visions to life – designing innovative solutions while meeting production timelines and budgets and ensuring every show runs smoothly, safely and professionally all while advancing the theatre’s mission to provide innovative theatrical and artistic experiences through presentation, participation, and education.

Responsibilities Include:

Technical and Physical Production Design and Execution:

Work with directors to design the sets, create drawings and obtain director approval on necessary technical and construction plans or identify and oversee capable set designers to support ACT productions.
In collaboration with directors, design lights and design / plot sound effects and other audio elements as needed in support of the directors’ vision; obtain director approval prior to executing.
Research, source/procure materials and supplies, manage the construction and painting of sets using various materials and techniques.
Directly supervise and ensure execution of all technical aspects of productions, including set construction/painting, lighting, sound, electrics, strikes, and other technical work in a safe and orderly manner.
Develop and maintain a production timeline to ensure all technical elements are completed on schedule.
Oversee costs for materials and technical expenses to maintain fiscally responsible productions.
Participate in production meetings, supervise technical and cue to cue rehearsals, and support cast and crew in finalizing the overall production and integrating all technical components; attend and support preview performances to make necessary adjustments before opening night.
Assess technical capabilities for rentals, co-productions, and special events.
Delegate tasks effectively and provide training/guidance to all team members as appropriate, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment with volunteers and fellow employees.
Ensure all units are safe, functional, and meet the needs of the performers and production team.
Operate lights and sound for co-productions and as needed for theatre performances.
Maintenance of Theatre Equipment and Facilities:

Manage maintenance and repair of theatrical equipment, ensure clean and organized stage, work, technical and storage areas, and oversee inventory of technical gear, construction tools and equipment.
Develop and manage improvement projects for technical infrastructure.
Support the completion of basic maintenance of the campus facilities and work with business manager for any larger-scale maintenance needs.
Volunteer Sourcing and Education:

Work with the Artistic Director to source volunteers to support all technical production positions, manage volunteers and step in as needed.
Create a pool of volunteers to support set construction, painting and technical execution of lights and sound leveraging capabilities to ensure coverage for productions and absences.
Develop and conduct specialized technical and design workshops.
Procedural and Policy Related:

Ensure proper training, safety, storage and operation of all technical equipment.
Implement and enforce OSHA and industry safety standards
Work closely with directors, designers and other volunteers ensuring their understanding of the theatre’s systems and infrastructure
Develop and maintain technical documentation for productions, co-productions, etc.
Develop and/or maintain documentation on the use and upkeep of all software, technical and non-technical equipment involved with or used in support of theatre activities and/or productions.
Develop and maintain documented work guidelines and processes to be applied to all volunteers.
Keep production spaces, tools and equipment organized and in good condition.
Working Conditions:

Physical Demands:

Lifting / carrying 50+ lbs.
Sitting / standing for 3-4 hours at a time.
Working on ladders, scaffolding and mechanical lifts up to 40’ in elevation.
Work Environment:

Solitary and teamwork settings.
Noise levels range from quiet to loud.
Indoor and outdoor workspaces.
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or a related field.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in leading scenic construction and management.
A minimum of 2 years of set, lighting and sound design experience.
Strong Artistic Skills with an emphasis in collaboration, creativity and attention to detail.
Demonstrated knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in lighting, sound, construction and rigging.
Knowledge of Behringer sound equipment, ETC Element 2 lighting equipment and SketchUp or similar design software.
Excellent organizational and project management skills.
Strong professional and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated capability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Experience recruiting and building rapport with volunteers.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for rehearsals and performances as required, and volunteer builds in coordination with fellow staff.
Preferred Qualifications:

An MFA in Theatre.
Advanced Carpentry Skills.
5+ years of experience in scenic construction and management for theatrical productions.
5+ years of set, lighting and sound design experience.
2+ years of experience Behringer sound equipment, ETC Element 2 lighting equipment and SketchUp or similar design software.
Compensation and benefits:

Salary range quoted includes stipend for support of co-productions as required
Flexible schedule, nights and weekends are often required
2 weeks paid personal time off available upon successful completion of 6-month performance review
Reimbursement for attendance at industry workshops and conferences may be available
Reimbursement for continuing education expenses to be determined
Reports to the Artistic Director
