Job Opening: Summer Circus Camp Coach, 2023
Silver Lining Circus Camp (a program of the Flying Gravity Circus, Wilton NH)
Reports to: Camp Directors
The Silver Lining Circus Camp (SLCC), a program of the Flying Gravity Circus, is looking for an enthusiastic and playful circus coach, particularly tumbling/acro, for four weeks of circus day camp in Milford, NH, between June 23 - July 21. Camp days run Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm with coach hours from 8:30am-4:30pm daily.
Camp Sessions:
2-week Tour Camp for 11-18 year olds with prior circus or performance experience:
Wk 1: June 26-30 - Train and build the show
Wk 2: July 3-7 - Take the show on the road to local programs, including a July 4th parade
1-week Youth Camp sessions for 9-14 year olds of any experience:
Session 1: July 10-14
Session 2: July 17-21 + LOAD OUT (Friday after camp)
Additional Days:
June 23 (Fri), 1-5pm: LOAD-IN (equipment moving from storage to camp location)
June 24 (Sat), 1-5pm: ORIENTATION
Description: SLCC provides quality, safe circus skill training within a fun, inclusive, recreational camp culture from children ages 6-18. Camps are grouped by age: Junior Camp (ages 6-8); Youth Camp (ages 9-14); and Tour Camp (ages 11-18 with prior experience). Camp coaches teach tumbling, acro, and human pyramids; balance (rola bola, globe, low wire, stilts); juggling and manipulation (toss juggling, diabolo, flower sticks, poi), aerials (silks and/or static trapeze); and character (clowning, mime). Each session includes show-making that includes input from the campers, culminating with a performance for family and friends. The coaches aim to make the circus experience exciting and fun by promoting teamwork, creating a positive atmosphere, and emphasizing the joy of circus activities. They break down difficult skills into manageable steps to ensure that all students feel successful, regardless of how quickly they progress.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Lead warm-ups in rotation with other coaches
Run the daily tumbling rotations with an eye toward identifying beginner, intermediate, and advanced abilities in the campers, adapting to campers’ needs and interests
Coordinate tumbling passes into an opening “chari vari” that progresses from basic to higher skills
Help design and spot human pyramids, partner acro
Facilitate act-making in other circus skill areas (juggling, balance)
Participate in running the shows
Supervise and engage with campers during snack, lunch, and other non-instructive times
Contribute to a physically and emotionally safe environment; uphold FGC’s youth protection policy of “three pairs of eyes”
Arrive on time and help prepare for the day; stay after for meetings and clean-up (this is paid time)
Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other camp coaches and directors
Communicate any staff or camper concerns or conflicts with camp director
Contribute to a fun, motivational, supportive camp culture providing both challenge and reward to the campers
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would have
Recent experience coaching tumbling/acrobatics to children and/or teens
Working knowledge of several circus skills in addition to acrobatics
Ability to attend load-in and load-out days, and orientation
Ability to lift equipment and spot campers where appropriate
Ability to effectively communicate with campers, parents, coaches, and camp directors
Ability to collaborate
Positive attitude and aptitude for creative problem-solving
First aid/CPR certified a bonus
NOTE that shared housing can be provided for coaches whose commutes are too distant from the camp location (First Congregational Church, Milford NH).
