Description:
DESCRIPTION
Note: This is a non-union, unpaid volunteer opportunity. The creative team is developing KINKY with the goal of a future full production. The staged reading will support the creation of a press kit to pursue grant funding.
About the Project
KINKY is a new stage play by Ashley Graves that centers on Tiff, a Black woman who returns home to West Philly only to find the past waiting in the form of a crumbling community, her grandmother’s choices, and a long-buried family secret. KINKY is a tangled journey of what we inherit, what we hide, and what it takes to heal when life forces you to start over.
This intimate staged reading explores themes of Black womanhood, generational trauma, and beauty politics—with hair as both metaphor and method of survival.
This is a non-union unpaid project developed in New York City.

Character Breakdown
TIFF – Black woman, late 20s. Pretty but understated. Some might call her average. She’s lost and trying to find her way back to herself—and her hair.
CHERYL – Black woman, late 40s. Tiff’s aunt. Performs a false self-image for the world. Stepped into a mother role for Tiff, but not without baggage.
TONI – Black woman, early to mid 40s. Assertive, no-nonsense, salon owner. Believes in simplicity—whether it’s hair or life.
CATCH UP – Black woman, early 20s. Sweet and straightforward. A young single mother doing her best. Known for her go-to braid style.
EDDIE – Black man, early 30s. The charming good guy. Loves women but isn’t a player. Barbershop type with a simple fade and occasional flair.
GRANDMA – Older Black woman, old enough to be your grandmother, with natural gray hair. Tiff’s grandmother, who has essentially raised her. A “do as you’re told” type, she embodies the warmth, strength, and wisdom of everyone’s grandma—always wanting the best for her loved ones.
