Volunteer Opportunity: Boston Circus Guild Board Member
The Boston Circus Guild Board guides the organization according to the BCG’s mission and core values. As a collaborative, deliberative body, the BCG manages strategic planning and long-term vision for the BCG, while dealing with some short-term organizational tasks. Current board priorities include: Planning the structure and policies of the BCG while looking through a lens of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Prioritizing organizational activities while recovering from pandemic financial losses; Implementing recommendations to ensure that event performances are safe for staff, performers, and clients.

Responsibilities include:
Participating in committees that oversee different parts of the organization’s operations
Contributing to critical discussions about the direction of the organization and issues that arise
Option to volunteer for positions of responsibility and leadership
Working collaboratively with a team to accomplish administrative and organizational tasks
Responding to email communications, including votes, in a timely manner
Attending one 2-hour board meeting per month

Qualifications:
Board members should exhibit qualities of being reliable, proactive, and communicative, as well as a drive to learn. Successful candidates will have some relevant experience in organizational leadership and operations, and possess a commitment to BCG’s mission. We use the Google suite to manage our documentation and communication, so having literacy with and experience using Google Drive is a plus.

Time Commitment
Board members are expected to spend a maximum of 10 hours per month on work related to board committees including one 2-hour board meeting per month. Board meetings occur on Sunday afternoons between 12:30pm and 2:30pm.

Process
Interested candidates should send a brief statement of interest (about one paragraph) about why they are interested in joining and why, as well as a resumé or statement about what they are able to contribute to the board. Select applicants will be invited for an informational interview with the board chair. Selected candidates will enter into a shadow period, and become non-voting board members for a minimum term of 2 board meetings after which - if they are still in desire of joining - board members will nominate them for a position and vote on their membership.

The first term is one year, and following that members may serve an additional two terms that are two years each, with a limit of five years serving on the board.
