The Phoenix Theatre Company is a LOA LORT D Theatre and Arizonas largest professional regional.

Located in the heart of the Central Arts District close to downtown Phoenix, our beautiful 14-acre campus includes three theaters, a restaurant and bar, rehearsal halls, and production shops, all on one site. We produce a wide range of theatre, from full scale musicals to comedies, dramas and original new works. With a $17 million annual operating budget, and celebrating our 105th Season, we offer 9-11 diverse productions every season.


Job Summary:

The Associate Technical Director provides support to the Technical Director in managing the scene shop operations, primarily for maintenance of equipment, tools and supplies, and tracking stock. The Associate Technical Director is also an aid in all phases of set construction for all productions at The Phoenix Theatre Company. This position has a key role in facilitating the support and organization of the scenic department during the company+rsquo;s ongoing expansion, with a new theatre space opening in April 2025.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities

Participates in set construction and oversees quality of all scenic elements
Participates in brainstorming the execution of scenic design drawings
Maintains scene shop inventory, and ensures all equipment and tools needed are available
Executes special projects as assigned by the Technical Director or Director of Production
Provides or arranges for maintenance of scene shop equipment and tools
Consults and advises the Technical Director of all maintenance and repairs costs
Assumes duties of the Technical Director in their absence
Organizes and maintains cleanliness of the scene shop maintaining a safe working environment based on OSHA standards
Ensures and maintains the design and integrity of each production throughout its run
Helps in the guidance of all Scenic Department volunteer apprentices
Adheres to all production deadlines
Receives and executes all production notes given by the artistic team within reason and budget
Works cohesively with all production departments to execute each production successfully

Minimum Qualifications
A degree in Technical Theatre or equivalent experience in regional and/or professional theatre or equivalent industries.
Computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
Experience working with CAD (Vectorworks or AutoCAD)
Ability to work at heights up to 30 feet in an upright or scissor lift
Background and expertise in set construction and the use of hand and power tools
Strong mind for technically complex scenery and technically complex problem solving
Knowledge of standard safety practices
Ability to perform all types of construction methods e.g., welding, carpentry, painting, etc.
Organizational skills
Knowledge of scenic engineering and construction drafting to implement in creation and communication of technical designs
Experience with rigging, hydraulics, pneumatics, and theatrical automation
Familiarity with a wide variety of construction materials/methods/equipment and uses

Physical / Mental Demands + Working Conditions
General theatre and scene shop work environment
Technical rehearsals require additional night and weekend hours outside of scene shop
Heavy lifting and heights
Work with and operate heavy machinery and tools

Compensation/Start Date
$47,000-$54,000 annually (BOE)
Desired start date: Mid August 2025
