Description:DescriptionResponsibilities of the Position Reporting to the Head of Middle & Upper School and Director of Performing Arts, the Part-Time Assistant Technical Theater Director is an hourly position, beginning in September 2025. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assisting the Director of Performing Arts in implementing and supervising the execution of scenic elements for productions (creation, transportation, installation, and removal) Supporting the planning, evaluation, scheduling, implementation, engineering, and supervision of all scenic elements involved in organizational programming Working as a designer in a desired area of interest for each school production Supporting student technicians through the design and creation process Collaborating with the Director of Performing Arts to coordinate set, lighting, sound, props, and costumes as needed, based on designs Supporting the Director of Performing Arts in creating detailed materials and labor cost-outs and build schedules for each production Working closely with the Director of Performing Arts and other members of the creative team to establish build priorities Attending all design meetings, production meetings, and technical rehearsals Collaborating with the Director of Performing Arts to ensure that all projects are completed on time and within budget Actively supporting budget planning for current and future seasons Working with the Director of Performing Arts, arts staff, and part-time carpenters, technicians, apprentices, interns, and volunteers Ensuring safe, organized, and efficient working areas in all Barrie Theatrical facilities (Mainstage Theater, Shop, and Costumes/Props Closet) Actively supporting long-range planning to serve the equipment and facility needs of the theater Other duties related to theater productions as assigned (including but not limited to running lighting, sound, and video for ceremonies, staff events, and dances) Skills We seek candidates who possess: Education and experience in technical theater operations, including scenic design/construction, overhead rigging, and scene shop maintenance Experience in stage lighting operation, drafting, design, implementation, and programming with ETC eos and the Element lighting console Experience in sound design/reinforcement, live-mixing, and basic wireless microphone and intercom systems Familiarity with the operations and responsibilities of other theatrical departments, including props, costumes, and stage management Strong verbal/written communication skills Experience supervising students Ability to create and interpret floor plans and lighting plots, and to develop and construct production plans from blueprints or sketches Sufficient expertise to instruct others in the operation and minor repair of lighting and sound equipment, the use of hand and power tools, and the techniques and materials of scenic construction Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 100 pounds Ability to work at heights of up to 25 feet, including from ladders, catwalks, scaffolding, and personnel lifts Demonstration of cross-cultural competence, empathy, and anti-racist pedagogies and practices Flexibility, a creative and collaborative spirit, a sense of humor, and a commitment to building rapport with colleagues In addition, those who thrive at Barrie commit to: Living out the mission and values of the institution Demonstrating a passion for working with Middle & Upper School students Taking accountability for all areas of responsibility Being a positive team player in a highly collaborative environment Taking an active role in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts Being enthusiastic, joyful, and curious about teaching and learning Being an effective communicator Remaining open to feedback and continual growth
