The Assistant Technical Director is responsible for overseeing and safely implementing the planning, supervision, and execution of the lighting, sound, and projection designs for all Theatre & Dance productions, including installation, maintenance, and restoration of the space following each production. The position will also assist the technical director in the safe, construction, installation, maintenance, removal, and storage of scenic elements for productions, and share the responsibility of keeping the shop and theatre facilities spaces in safe, organized working condition.

Requirements
Essential Functions:
• Manage and maintain lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
• Supervise the hanging and focusing of lighting designs.
• Supervise and mentor sound designers (typically students) with equipment installation and programming.
• Supply the sound engineering and equipment set-up including programming the board for dance concerts.
• Train and manage lab students, federal work study students, and student assistants in conjunction with the Technical Director.
• Supervise students in the shop and stage spaces.
• Keep the shop and stage spaces in neat working order.
• Provide additional professional assistance and oversight to assist the Technical Director.
• Assist with the construction of scenery and shop storage equipment.
• Assist with creation and adaptation of technical drawings.
• Determine, order, obtain, and maintain supplies.
• Troubleshoot, program, and operate the CNC machine.
• Be present during technical rehearsals to support technical needs.

Other Functions:
• Supervise student paint crews.
• Manage the prop storage area and be responsible for prop loans to outside organizations.
• Attend weekly production meetings and attend to the needs of designers throughout the production process.
• Assist in developing a comprehensive build calendar and plan for each production.
• Preparation of time, labor, and materials projections for the season’s shows.
• Assist Technical Director and Director of Theatre in administration and supervision of safety systems.
• Maintains offsite scenic storage area.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Minimum bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or related field / equivalent experience.
• Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in technical theatre, which may include time spent in college.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings for theatre design.
• Ability to lead and supervise a crew.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a design and production team for theatre and dance productions.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends.
• Ability to use CAD software (e.g., Vectorworks).
• Basic computer literacy, ability to learn and use Google suite software, and other online collaborative software.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Ability to read and analyze a budget.
• Prior experience ShopBot CNC Router System.
• Thorough knowledge of theatrical lighting equipment and systems (ETC experience is preferable).
• General knowledge of theatrical sound equipment and systems.
• Working knowledge of Video Projections systems.
• Working knowledge of theatrical shop equipment use, and building and rigging techniques.

Accountabilities:
• This position takes responsibility for self-managing their work and delivering items on time for productions.
• Direct supervision of student workers and volunteers in day-to-day activities, including assigning work, reviewing performance, provide work direction, and problem-solving assistance.
• Working within budget ranges as assigned by Technical Director and Director of Theatre.
Physical Requirements:
• Climbing, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting occasionally up to 50 lbs, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing. Close visual acuity.
• Ability to drive to off campus storage facility and complete some supply shopping.
