Job Summary
Due to a change in circumstances, Theatre Nation Partnerships and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch are recruiting an Assistant Director, resident on tour, for the touring production of Handbagged by Moira Buffini.
Job Description
We are looking for a skilled and organised director with experience in directing and/or assisting in the direction of comedy for the stage. Ideally, the candidate should have experience of working with understudies and an understanding of touring theatre productions.

The Assistant Director will work full-time in rehearsals, collaborating with director Alex Thorpe, learning the show and assisting in rehearsing the ensemble of 6 actors. The Assistant Director will be responsible for rehearsing the two understudies. The Assistant Director will develop a strong understanding of the production to enable them to lead the mounting of the production in each new venue and maintain the show on tour.

The Assistant Director will be scheduled to attend each venue for 2 days per week to include, but not limited to, supporting the production installation at the venue, a show watch, a rehearsal or understudy call and notes session. Most of these weekly commitments on tour fall on the Tuesday and Wednesday, with the exception of Wolverhampton Grand (W/C 24 Feb) and Key Theatre Peterborough (W/C 10 March), where the working days are Thursday and Friday.

Fee of £6,950 (depending on availability). The fee includes full-time attendance at rehearsals, tech, previews and press at QTH. The assistant director will be expected to work 3 days during the run at QTH for understudy work and understudy tech. The Assistant Director must be available 2 days per week.

Rehearsals begin on 6 January 2025 at Queen's Theatre Hornchurch. Opening at Queen's Theatre Hornchurch on 11 February and touring until 24 May 2025.

Job Requirements

The Assistant Director will work full-time in rehearsals, collaborating with director Alex Thorpe, learning the show and assisting in rehearsing the ensemble of 6 actors. The Assistant Director will be responsible for rehearsing the two understudies. The Assistant Director will develop a strong understanding of the production to enable them to lead the mounting of the production in each new venue and maintain the show on tour. On tour, the Assistant Director will support and work with the stage management team in the installation of the show at each venue, continue to rehearse the understudies for performance, whilst maintaining the performances of the ensemble cast through noting.

The Assistant Director will lead on the scheduled learning activities at each tour venue as part of their responsibilities in the first two days at each venue. These include pre-show talks and page to stage workshops. Any agreed work outside of these two days will incur additional payments.
