Overview
The Assistant Charge Scenic Artist will be involved in executing the painting of all scenic elements and assist the Charge Scenic Artist in day-to-day paint department operations. Candidates from populations underrepresented in technical theatre are strongly encouraged to apply.
Essential Functions
Collaborate with the Charge Scenic Artist to research, define, and implement all scenic paint needs.
Complete all scenic paint work on time and within available resources.
Supervise paint department staff, overhire artists, and volunteers under the direction of the Charge Scenic Artist.
Work with, supervise, and sometimes teach paint department interns.
Attend technical and/or dress rehearsals to take notes and finish paint work as directed by the Charge Scenic Artist.
Assist in the finishes and painting of properties, under direction of the Charge Scenic Artist and the Properties Department as needed.
Workdays could be long surrounding tech week, with occasional night and weekend calls.
Lead paint department operations during Phoenix remounts.
Short Phoenix residencies required based on production needs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Maintenance and Administrative Duties
Maintain ATC tools, paint shop areas, and paint inventories.
Assist on other ATC special events or programs as assigned by the Production Manager.
Occasionally purchase tools and materials for the Paint Department, as directed by the Charge Scenic Artist.
Competencies
Comprehensive knowledge of traditional scenic paint techniques and carving practices, including but not limited to: paint mixing, sculpting, trompe l’oeil, drop painting, HVLP sprayers, and the ability to understand and paint from provided samples and renderings.
Ability to create paint samples from renderings under the direction of the Charge Scenic Artist.
Working knowledge of brushes, carving tools, sprayers, scenic paint, sealers, and other materials and tools commonly used in scenic art.
Self-motivated, energetic, and an effective and efficient communicator.
Detail-oriented, accountable, and able to operate within deadline-oriented schedules.
Able to uphold a tone of collaboration, respect, optimism, and professionalism while maintaining composure in a fast-paced work environment.
Qualifications
College degree and/or equivalent professional experience in scenic art.
Eligibility to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Occasional overtime and night/weekend work required.
Long periods of sitting, standing, bending, and kneeling required.
Able to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Able to work at heights (personnel lifts, ladders, scaffolding).
Short Phoenix residencies required.
