Circus Arts Residency for Creative Capacity
:: June 2022 :: St. Andrews New... ...
Requirements:
THE BOX
We use the situation of the residency to stage an encounter between the artists and a set of ideas that will change your lives forever. It centres around the idea of a "box" created by Jay Gilligan and Frodo Santini that contains elements for the artists in residence to engage with as an enabling factor in your creation throughout the month. These elements are “terms of the residency” and embody pieces which must be responded to and grappled with throughout the creation process.
All these elements will be prepared before their arrival and placed in a physical BOX. Upon entering the mansion, artists will open the box and see laid out before them a mixture of media, activities, and creative material to prompt further creation. The box will also include instructions from Jay and Frodo and a schedule of meetings with them both online and in person.
The box formalizes what is always the case for any artist (that we have contours in any situation that we learn to play with--artfully--to render something new). At the end of the month, the 6 artists in residence will box up a collection of ideas and elements for the 2023 artists in residence! In this way we will experiment with collective creation over time, and the meaning of what lives on from ephemeral work. Jay will be present intentionally through the box, but Jay will also come in person for the final week of June and work with the artists to render an experience for July 1st (should be around 2 thousand people) and to box up the complexity of the creations that have happened. We believe this kind of approach might also uncover new approaches to economy, IP, and artistic financial flourishing.
Will I get to develop my own work?
If this residency is for you, you will see your individual practice (and its future) as connected to how you grow your creative capacity with other artists today! Your mind-frame must be ready to include group processes and activities that focus more on creative capacity than end products. Our rationale: if you don’t work on these muscles, you will become boring before you become old.
What showcases are required as part of the residency?
There are 3 planned moments of public performance that are part of the terms of the residency.
A pop-up guerilla performance on the main street of St. Andrews outside Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre
An immersive event in Kingsbrae Gardens (all ground work in an award winning magical space)
Amphitheatre Show on July 1st - A public 60 minute show developed with Jay and Frodo in the final week of the residency
