“When circus is not itself anymore” is a series of durational performative installations merging the worlds of contemporary circus and performance art which will happen in performance venues, galleries, site specific locations and exhibition spaces around the world.

Contemporary circus often attempts to break its traditional roots by embracing the styles and working methods of contemporary dance and theatre. However this can leads to the power of the circus actions to be diminished and framed as something other than itself. The Exhibition Project seeks to back off from this trend and show circus in its rawest and most vulnerable state. This will involve artists maintaining specific ‘circus actions’ for multiple hours whilst the visitors to the exhibition space can freely observe how the artist’s body changes over time. This project seeks to incapsulate what circus is through the strength, determination and perseverance of the artists involved.
