APRIL TRAPEZE & LYRA WORKSHOPS

SEQUENCING ON DANCE TRAPEZE w/ Naomi Ullian, April 20, 3:00 – 4:30 pm LIONS AND ELBOWS AND BEATS, OH MY! w/ Rebecca Starr, April 21, 3:00 – 4:30 pm __________ SEQUENCING ON DANCE TRAPEZE w/ Naomi Ullian Join us for an afternoon of innovative sequencing on low-flying dance trapeze. We will work below and on the bar and in the ropes, examining artful transitions and shapes that benefit from spin and motion. WHEN: April 20, 3:00 – 4:30 pm WHERE: Trapezium COST: $50 | $40 if in Bar Apparatus Meeting PREREQS: Student should be able to do three pull-ups, invert multiple times in the air, and hold hip balance and single knee hang for 10 seconds hands-free. A 2016 graduate of the professional training programs at NECCA, Naomi co-founded the performance group BIG TEETH, with whom she has had the good fortune to practice collaborative theater-making since 2017, mostly dark comedy about social ecology. Having leaned heavily on creative activity as a balm for existential confusion for as long as she can remember, Naomi is very pleased to share the worlds of hand-balancing, trapeze, partner acrobatics, physical theater, and creative practice with her students. __________ LIONS AND ELBOWS AND BEATS, OH MY! w/ Rebecca Starr Join us in this aerial hoop workshop to break down technique, drills, and variations for lion rolls, elbow rolls, and beats! We will start with the basics – progressions and drills to build technique, muscular pathways, and stamina – then move into the full skills and hopefully variations on the theme! Reverse elbow circles, beats with directional changes, and snakey style roll-ups could all be on the table! WHEN: April 21, 3:00 – 4:30 pm WHERE: Trapezium COST: $50 | $40 if in Bar Apparatus Meeting PREREQS: Participants should have strong inverts, tolerance for pain, discomfort and bruising, 3 clean pike beats from the top bar, plus a willingness to learn and patience. Please bring elbow/arm protection (long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt) and wear tight fitting clothing (to keep from wrapping around the bar). After years of competing she found her true love, performance and the Circus Arts. In the early 2000s Rebecca studied dance and movement at San Diego State University, while performing with the Fern Street Circus and Cirque de la Mer. Rebecca is the co-founder of Lyralicious, a duo specializing in Aerial Hoop. She performed worldwide as part of Lyralicious for many years. She has been featured on MTV’s MADE, NY Ink, and CBS This Morning; and performed with Cirque Dreams, “The Girlie Show”, L.A Circus, Quixotic Fusion, Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Festival, San Diego Symphony, Middlebury Opera Company, and countless more special events, corporate productions, and galas. Rebecca was an integral part of the emerging world of Pole Fitness in the early 2010s; she competed, performed and judged internationally for several years. Pre-Covid, Rebecca traveled as a master instructor, doing tours and residencies at circus schools and studios across the globe. From 2016 she coached and choreographed for the Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour, and from 2020-2022 was the Head of Aerial Arts at Circadium School of Contemporary Circus in Philadelphia, where she also taught Pole, Contortion, and Acrobatics.
